Obituary for Frank W. Sek, MD

October 10, 1926 - July 21, 2021
McHenry, Illinois | Age 94

The only child born to Polish-speaking immigrants John and Kate, Frank W. Sek died July 21, 2021, in McHenry surrounded by his family. He was 94.

Frank graduated as salutatorian from Wells High School in Chicago in 1943. At 17 years old, he forged his mother's signature and enlisted in the U.S. Army, narrowly missing being sent to the Battle of the Bulge. After basic training in Fort Hood, Texas, he was sent to Italy as a Military Policeman to guard a German SS prison camp and honorably discharged in 1946. The army and the G.I. Bill changed the course of Frank's life. He was able to attend college, first attending Ripon College in Wisconsin; then Stanford University; followed by the University of Illinois on Navy Pier, and the U of I campus in Champaign, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He was accepted at Illinois College of Medicine and was able to put himself through medical school with the help of a stipend from the G.I. Bill. While an intern at the Milwaukee County Emergency Hospital, he met his future wife of 66 years, Carol Redmann, a nurse. Frank completed his residency at Oak Park Hospital before marrying Carol in 1955 and settling in McHenry.

Frank W. Sek was the longest-serving general practitioner in McHenry County, working 57 continuous years in his own solo practice, and finally retiring at the age of 88. On the staff of Harvard Hospital in Harvard, Illinois, Frank often rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle around town making house calls — and to patients' homes to collect on outstanding bills. Because Frank was fluent in Polish, many Polish-speaking patients drove to McHenry from Chicago to seek his help. It wasn't uncommon for him to bring home two dozen eggs or a fully cooked goose as payment for his services. Frank never failed to turn off a light, or remind his children that a cup of coffee used to be a nickel, or engage in a spirited political debate; his dry and witty sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Carol J. Sek, on April 17, 2021, a daughter-in-law, Rebecca McCord-Sek; and an infant son, Gregory. He is survived by sons Jonathan (Zoe) Sek of San Jose, CA, Jeffrey (Lisa) Sek of Bayside, WI, and Darreld(Mary) Sek of Lake Bluff; daughter Jeanine (Mark) Chyna, MD, of Libertyville; grandsons Daniel, Bryan and Matthew; and granddaughters Sydney, Katherine and Megan.

Frank's final wish was to be of service in his death. He gifted his body to medical science so future doctors could learn from him. A graveside military interment service will be held in the Redmann family plot in Royalton, Wisconsin, for both Frank and Carol.
