Barbara Gilpin, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2021 at her home in McHenry, Illinois with her loving family by her side.

She was born in McHenry on March 11, 1929, the daughter of Herbert and Hilda (Weber) Freund. She married her late husband George Gilpin Sr. on July 1, 1950 at St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry.

Barbara was always active in her community. She was a reporter for the McHenry Plaindealer (1969-1976). She began her career in public service when she was elected to the office of McHenry City Clerk in 1976, which held until her retirement in 1994. During her tenure as city clerk, she was a member of the Municipal Clerks of Illinois Association, co-chair of the Chamber of Commerce Sesquicentennial Commission, Liaison for the Landmark Commission, and secretary/treasurer of the Economic Development Commission. In recognition of her dedication to the building and growth of the McHenry community, she was selected as the 1994 Fiesta Days Parade Marshal.

Barbara was also a lifelong active member of St. Mary Church in McHenry. She participated in the organization of the annual church rummage sales; was a member of the Christian Mothers; served on the Parish Finance Council and was a choir member for 80 years. She was honored by St. Mary Church as a Woman of Inspiration in 2014.

Her leisure activities included bowling (scoring a 300 game!); tennis (women's doubles champion at Crystal Lake Racket Club); and golf (2 holes-in-one with plaques to prove it!!)

Barbara is survived by her children; Mary Jo Decker, Skip Gilpin (Cindy Rivera), Gary Gilpin, Gina Gilpin Miller (Mike); her grandchildren: Jason Gilpin (Heather Barizpna), Brenna Decker and Sherri Strassle; her great-grandchildren: Mason and Lily, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her loving caregiver/friend, Rosalind Trabue.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Gilpin Sr.; her parents Herbert and Hilda Freund; her brothers Eugene and Paul Freund as well as her sister, Joan Freund and her aunt, Bertilla Freund.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Colonial Funeral Home 591 Ridgeview Dr. Mchenry IL 60050. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 9:30am to 10:30am. Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary Catholic Church in McHenry on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 11:00am, followed by interment at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in McHenry.
