Obituary

Elaine Sue Nell, of McHenry passed away peacefully Sunday May 14th, 2017 in her home.

She was born 1927 in McHenry to Ambrose and Dorothy (Freund) Schaefer. Elaine married her McHenry High School sweetheart, Henry F. Nell on February 7th 1948 in St. Marys church McHenry, with the groom's uncle, Father George Nell officiating.

Elaine is survived by her three daughters, Cindy Oeffling (Rick Sweeney), Jessie (Denny) Smith and Beth Staley. Her grandsons, Nick (Amy) Oeffling, Brad (April) Oeffling, Chris Smith, Dave Smith and Matt Staley (Becky Bland); her three great grandchildren, Braylen, Brynlee, Grant Oeffling and her sister in-law Ethel Nell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrose and Dorothy Schaefer; her husband, Hank Nell (2003); sister and brother-in law, Marilyn (Tom) Harrison; and sister in-law, Henrietta Nell.

Elaine was an active member of St. Mary's CCW. She enjoyed helping with the annual rummage sale for which she made all the signs for over 35 years. Being born and raised in McHenry, Elaine had an active interest in its history. She was a charter member of the McHenry County Historical Society, the Genealogical society, a member of the American Legion and V.F.W of McHenry. She enjoyed painting, flower arranging, gardening, sewing, baking, and being creative. Sundays were always Bear football days, Elaine's favorite team. After her husband's death, Elaine started a Monthly Widows Club in which she and about 20 other widows would meet once a month at a local restaurant for lunch. She eagerly looked forward to those get togethers and treasured the friendships.

A visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, May 18, 2017, and will continue from 10:00am to 10:30am on Friday, May 19, 2017, at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, with Mass beginning at 11:00am at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1407 N Richmond Road, McHenry. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elaine's name to 1st Way Life Center, 3714 Fairview Avenue, Johnsburg, IL 60051, or Montini Catholic School, 1405 N Richmond Road, McHenry, IL 60050.
