Spring Grove, Illinois | Age 85

Loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Great-Great-Grandmother

Obituary

Elsie Miriam Ehredt, 85, of Spring Grove IL, died August 31, 2017 at Woodstock Hospice Center. She was born October 4, 1931 to August and Aleksandra (Walimaki) Niemi and grew up in Watson MI in the "Finn Settlement." She graduated from Gwinn High School in 1949.
In 1950 Elsie moved to McHenry IL, where she married Melvin M. Ehredt June 27, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Volo area. In addition to being a busy farmwife and mother, Elsie worked for many years at Brake Parts Manufacturing in McHenry as an order expeditor and retired as a receptionist in 1997. Elsie and Melvin moved to Spring Grove in 1980, where she lived her remaining years. A hard-working person, Elsie was lovingly devoted to her family. She was an expert seamstress, upholsterer, avid reader, and do-it-yourselfer. In her later years, she most-enjoyed her morning coffee and a sweet roll, visits and phone calls from family/friends around the country, the company of her little dog Susi, knitting, crossword puzzles, keeping up with the news, and ending her day with a good book. Elsie was known for her great potato salad - but unfortunately she never tasted it since she was allergic to mayonnaise. She was a caring perfectionist about everything she did (she did her crossword puzzles in ink!).
Surviving are five children: Daniel (Sandra), Claremore OK; Kathryn (John) Jorgensen, Woodbury MN; Sharon Stuessy, Madison WI; William, Ingleside; Ronald (Rebecca), Huntley. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, her sisters-in-law Lillian Behrens, Woodstock and Mae Ehredt, McHenry, and many nieces and nephews.
Elsie was preceded in death by husband Melvin (1981); sisters Helmi Maki (1970), Martha Ahti (1981), Viena Bryan (1999); brother August Walter Niemi (1997); grandson John Stuessy (2014.) Elsie was the youngest and last surviving of her siblings.
Funeral service is Saturday September 16th at 4:00pm at the Colonial Funeral Home 591 Ridgeway Road in McHenry, with Pastor Roger W. Schneider officiating. Visitation for the public is at 3:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or toward a family fund to create a lasting memorial for Elsie at a place she held dear.
