McHenry, Illinois | Age 91

Combat Infantryman US Army Korean War

Obituary

Born in Partheni, Greece

Gus A. Poulos age 91 passed away in his own bed April 9, 2021. Loving and devoted husband to Angie (née Chious) for 64 years. Loving and devoted father to Andrew Poulos and Elaine(Steve) Sinclair and cherished Papou to Dean and Dale Sinclair. Loving brother to Kaliope (George) Darras, William (Helen) Poulos and Mary (William) Schlau. Brother in law to John Chious. Favorite Uncle and Cousin to many.

Born to immigrant Greek parents, Gus arrived in his mother's arms. He was the eldest of four and soon learned to caddy and work various jobs to help his folks through the depression years, while living in the Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago.
In 1951 he received "Greetings" from Uncle Sam and proudly served in the Korean War where he received the CIB (Combat Infantry Badge) and ranked as Sergeant.
His hand shake pulled you in. He was a natural talker, salesman and story teller. He loved the game of golf and after Korea, Gus worked as Caddy Master at Bryn Mawr Country Club, Lincolnwood, where he mentored caddies for the Chick-Evans scholarship.
Later, Gus went into liquor sales and retired as Vice President for Jim Beam Distillery's cocktail division Mr and Mrs "T" (America's favorite Bloody Mary mix).
He LOVED Chicago baseball and was at the 1945 Cub's World Series game and could recite the starting line up impromptu; even though he classified himself as a "Sox" fan.
He LOVED his wife Angie, his family, golf, baseball, Florida, his alma-mater Lane Tech and his McHenry VFW Post #4600 where he performed various duties as a Lifetime Member. A true patriot.
You not only left a huge hole in mom's heart but to those that remember you as: Gussie, Gus, Costa, Uncle Gus, Papou, Dad - you will be greatly missed.
You were a "good one."
