Obituary

Joe Eugene Gahan, age 81, of McHenry, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 at White Oaks, in McHenry IL.

He was born on October 28. 1939 in Danville IL, the son of Marion Eugene and Ruth Ellen Gahan. He married his beloved wife, Judith Rehberg, on June 24, 1961 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Huntley, IL.

Joe took up teaching in 1961 and taught for eight years before pursuing a career in retail management. He started with the S.S. Kresge Company in 1969, which later became Kmart Corporation. He co-managed and managed stores in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He finished his career with CVS Health in 2004, and he and Judy returned to Illinois following their retirement.

While Joe was serious about his career and providing for his family, he most enjoyed spending time with them. He also found great joy relishing God's wonders in nature. He excelled at athletics throughout his life, including baseball, basketball and archery. He was an avid runner, starting in the early 1970s before running was popular, running several races, including several marathons. He coached all three of his children in sports, especially baseball and softball. He enjoyed gardening and was often out after dark tending to his yard.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Judith, and his children, Brian (Cindy) Gahan of Cary, IL; Jolynn (Richard) Gibson of Pittsburgh, PA and Sean Gahan of McHenry, IL. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Liam, Ethan and Megan Gahan; his sister Kathleen Hessell of Holly, MI; and his brother Jeff (Susan) Gahan of Peoria, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marion and Ruth Gahan.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 10 am to 11 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McHenry, IL, followed by Funeral Mass at 11 am. Interment will be at McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock, IL. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of White Oaks at McHenry and Heartland Hospice for their support, advice, and making Joe's last days interesting and comfortable.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be directed to The Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
