Obituary

John H. Grandt Jr., age 87, of McHenry passed away peacefully at his home on January 1, 2019, with the help of Journey Care.
John was born in Schiller Park, IL. to John and Lillian (nee Marquardt) Grandt. In 1935 the family moved to McHenry, IL to work and live on A. J. Krecker truck and vegetable farm. The farm was located on 185 acres on route 31, south of McHenry about one mile. On part of the land, now stands, Buss Ford and Lincoln car dealership. The house on the farm was huge and made into a duplex. In the very late 1930's a Japanese family came to live with John's family and work on the farm with them. They had twin girls that went to kindergarten at Landmark school. When the war came in 1941 with Japan, the family had to move and go to a camp in California.
A few years later the U. S. was at war with Germany, during that time Army truck would come to the farm in the morning with four German prisoners and one U.S. Army guard. The four worked in the fields with John's family. John's parents spoke German so there was never a problem. At the end of the day, the four prisoners were taken back to camp.
After the farming and school years, John served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. When he got out of the service he got a job in a factory. On January 21, 1956 he married Shelia Day who was a telephone operator in McHenry. She passed away October 7, 2001. John was an avid CUBS and BEARS fan, he enjoyed gardening, wood working, but most of all camping with his family, grandkids and friends.
He is survived by his two sons: John III (Vera) Grandt and Joseph Grandt both of McHenry; two sisters: Carol (Jim) Simon of McHenry and Elaine (Bernie) Peschke of White Lake, WI; his three grandkids: Heather (David Healy) Grandt, of Madison WI, John IV (Rebecca) Grandt of Harvard, IL, and Toni Grandt; his great grand-daughter Charli Settipani of Lake Geneva, WI as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parent, his wife, his son Jeffrey in 2010; his four brothers: Chester, Howard, Robert and David.
To honor John's wishes all services will be private.
