John "Jack" Phalin, age 90, passed away Sept. 18th, 2017, at JourneyCare Hospice in Woodstock, surrounded by his family.
He was born on a farm in south McHenry on Jan. 30th, 1927, to Thomas and Ellen (Spencer) Phalin.
He married Marilyn J. Kerns on Feb. 7th, 1948 in St. Patrick's Church in McHenry. John was raised in McHenry all of his life. He had various jobs working at his grandfather Spencer's Feed Mill, the McHenry Ice Cream Factory, many years of sales positions and owned and operated Jack's Sunrise Grocery and Liquor in Mchenry 1968 to 1988 until his retirement. He was affectionally known as "smiling Jack". John was a U.S. veteran of the Navy. He was a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge Order 691 and the American Legion Post 491. In addition, John marched in the rifle squad. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family. John always enjoyed taking his annual trip to Florida to visits his grandchildren. Jack was a conversationalist and loved by all that knew him.
He is survived by his children Alan (Karen Crones) of McHenry and Jacleen "Jackie" (Jim) Bowles of McHenry. Grandchildren Vanessa (Mike) Prather of Genoa City, Wisconsin, Jim Bowles (Loretta Sizemore) of Brooksville, FL, Kelsy Marquart, Karlie Crones and Jamie Crones of McHenry. Two great grandchildren, Jimmy Bowles and Casey Prather. Two brothers Larry (Pat) Phalin and Don (Arlene) Phalin and one sister Trisha McDaniel and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn of 63 years, his brother William and his wife Mary Phalin. Two grandsons Jonathan C. Bowles and John Alan Bowles.
John and his family express many thanks and gratitude at the staff at Centegra McHenry Hospital 550 pod and the staff at JourneyCare.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017, from 4pm to 8pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Dr., McHenry, and will continue on Friday, September 22, 2017, from 10am to 10:30am. Funeral Mass will begin at 11am at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 3500 W. Washington, McHenry. Interment will follow at St. Patrick's Countryside Cemetery.
