Obituary

Leonard F. Martinez, Jr. passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, after a recent cancer diagnosis.

Len, Lenny, or Pakka, as he was known to family, was born September 17, 1948 on the South Side of Chicago.

Len contracted polio at the age of 3, a year before the polio vaccine was introduced. Overcoming this gave him a grit and determination that would serve him well through his life.

Len's family moved to Algonquin when he was 8. He graduated from Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock where he met his best friend and the love of his life, Mary Ann Stilling, when she asked him to the Sadie Hawkins dance. They were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McHenry on April 26, 1969, and enjoyed 53 years of marriage.

Len relentlessly pursued his dreams and was a firm believer in education. With just 9 college credits when he married, he spent 13 years attending night school to earn an associate degree from McHenry County College, a bachelor's in accounting from Northern Illinois University, and a master's in tax law from DePaul University. He was a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner.

Len began his career as an accountant at Echlin Manufacturing in McHenry before embarking on a 17-year career with Elgin-based Safety-Kleen. Len then pivoted his career to follow his passion of financial investing, spending 20 years with Morgan Stanley.

Len was committed to his faith and was dedicated to giving back to his community. He was a 53-year member of St. Patrick's Parish, serving as a Eucharistic minister and as President of the Montini School Board. He also served as President of the McHenry County Catholic Education Foundation. He was a lifelong supporter of Marian Central, volunteering for three Capital Campaigns and making calls to help raise money for the Annual Appeal Fund.

Len was devoted to his family and when he became a grandfather, he lovingly became known as "Pakka." He adored his grandchildren and often said, "They have been the joy of my life." He loved nothing more than a weekend afternoon spent at his pool with his family, where he almost always entered the pool with a resounding "COWABUNGA!" For a number of years, he enjoyed hosting the "Len's Boone Creek Invitational" family golf outing near the family home in Woodstock, and played a fabulous "moo cow" while raising his children. Len taught his children to color outside the lines and always encouraged them to follow their dreams.

Len is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, and his children: Michele (Arland) Wingate, Tomahawk, WI, Kris (Phil) Farrell, St. Charles, IL; Joe (Trisha) Martinez, Mukwonago, WI; and Elizabeth Martinez, Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Maya and Kirsten Wingate of Madison, WI; Jack, Ava, and Kate Farrell of St. Charles; Hannah, Sarah, Gideon, and Isabelle Martinez of Mukwonago; and his siblings: Nancy Walden, Lori Haake, and Rich Martinez. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Sr. and Dolores (Norton) Martinez, his brother Michael (Mickey), and his nephew David.

The family is grateful for the kindness shown by the medical staff at JourneyCare hospice and Northwestern Medical McHenry Hospital.

Visitation will be held at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, on Sunday January 9, 2022, 3 PM to 7 PM For the health and safety of all, the family requests that masks be worn.
