Obituary for Robert "Bob" Eugene McDonough

January 18, 1942 - September 6, 2018
Buffalo Grove, Illinois | Age 76

Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Brother

Robert (Bob) Eugene McDonough was born January 18, 1942, in Norwood MA, and was risen again into Eternal Life on September 6, 2018.

Bob grew up in California and received a B.A. degree from Cal State LA. He then went on to earn a PhD. in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame. In 1967, he married his wife, Tina (nee Baldwin) at Sacred Heart Church on the ND campus. He was a Professor of Political Science at St. Olaf College in Northfield MN for many years, followed by becoming the Director of Financial Aid there. In 1978, he moved his family to the Chicago area and became the Advanced Placement Director for the Midwestern States at the College Board, a position he held until his retirement in 2000. Bob's post-retirement years were filled with frustrating attempts to become a scratch golfer, a trip to the Holy Land, a rotating schedule attending his grandchildren's athletic events, volunteer efforts with Meals on Wheels and in his parishes, visits back to ND and his home state of California, lots of red wine . . . and always daily Mass and Holy Communion.
Bob is survived by his wife of 51 years, Tina, his four children--Bobby, Mary, Maureen and Meghan--and his 12 grandchildren: Christopher, Erin, Michael, Alyssa, Katie, Monica, Natalie, Sara, Patrick, Kelly, Cecilia and Gwendolyn, as well as his brother Jack, his sister Kathleen, and countless in-laws, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Yolanda (nee Troilo) McDonough, and his brother Nick. Bob was a longtime parishioner of St. John Cantius in Chicago and, more recently, at St. Peter Church in Volo. His commitment to his family, to his faith, and to these parishes is his legacy--along with the wisdom he shared with all who crossed his path in this life. He was truly a Man For All Seasons and will be greatly missed.
A Wake will take place at Colonial Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 between 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately after at St. Peter Church in Volo, 27551 Volo Village Rd, at 11:30 a.m. Internment will be at St. Peter Cemetery behind the church.
For those who would like to attend a celebration of Bob's life and legacy (think Irish Wake!), information will be provided at the grave site.
